En effet, quiconque s'est intéressé de près ou de loin aux origines de ce crime historique sait que différentes tribus africaines ont délibérément vendu des millions de nos ancêtres aux négriers venus d'Europe et d'Amérique. Pour nous autres Afro-américains, le seul débat digne d'intérêt concernant les réparations est de savoir s'il est possible de contraindre les Etats-Unis, coupables d'avoir réduit nos ancêtres en esclavage pendant des siècles avant de nous faire l'aumône d'une citoyenneté de seconde zone, à payer et, dans l'affirmative, combien. Le montant dépasserait l'imagination; j'avais avancé il y a des années le chiffre faramineux de 24.000 milliards de dollars dans un article pour le magazine Time. Il est donc bien évident que, pour recevables que soient nos arguments, les Etats-Unis ne paieront jamais. Ne nous berçons pas d'illusions, nous ne toucherons pas un sou. Tout au plus pouvons-nous espérer des excuses bien tardives dans la lignée de larésolution adoptée par le congrès en 2008 pour exprimer les regrets de l'Amérique concernant «l'injustice, la cruauté, la brutalité et l'inhumanité profondes de l'esclavage et de la législation Jim Crow».

Ce qui m'amène à ma principale interrogation concernant l'article de Monsieur Gates: pourquoi lancer cette peau de banane au pauvre Barack Obama? Aux yeux de notre polémiste, Barack Obama, en sa qualité de premier président afro-américain de l'histoire, jouit d'une légitimité incontestable pour designer publiquement les vrais responsables de cette tragédie, à savoir les Blancs et les Noirs, des deux côtés de l'Atlantique. Belle idée, mais c'est un vœu pieux. On imagine mal Obama sermonnant les Africains sur leur responsabilité collective dans la traite des noirs. Même aux Etats-Unis, le président se fait très discret sur les questions raciales, une attitude d'ailleurs encore plus marquée depuis le tollé qu'il a provoqué en employant le mot «stupide» pour qualifier l'arrestation de Monsieur Gates dans sa propre maison.
